Friendship, Animal Rescue and Puerto Rico’s Darkest Hours

Friendship, Animal Rescue and Puerto Rico's Darkest Hours
 Good evening friends, — Day 82 since Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, and day 96 since Irma hit.
This is my good friend, Eli, his little rescue puppy. We met each other within the first days after Hurricane Maria hit on September 20th. Don’t be fooled by the smiles on our faces for the photo opp, we were utterly exhausted. Although, this picture was only about three months ago, it feels like another life from years back.

Eli had just retired from the board of Education back in NY after 33 years. He was coming to Puerto Rico to visit friends and family. The next thing he knows he’s living out of the Comfort Inn trapped in Puerto Rico because of Mari’s carnage.

For a month straight, the daily life of post Maria was extremely difficult. Communications had been annihilated. If you needed to speak to the airport, you had to go the airport. The problem was that if you chose to do that, you’d be using a lot of gas to get there. And once you were out of gas, there was no replacing it. Many people had no choice and went to the airport anyway, only to find out all flights were cancelled. And guess what ? — Now they had to sleep at the airport. That’s how crazy it got.Despite everything Maria threw at Eli, he kept that puppy by his side the whole time. And in return, the puppy managed to offer Eli some solace in an apocalyptic moment of time.

After 15 days of hell, Eli made it off the island and over to Florida. It’s amazing after only two weeks of knowing each other, Eli, myself and other members of our temporary crew will always been friends. The things that happened, and the things we saw can never be undone or unseen. And through that, an unbreakable bond was formed.

I will never refer to Hurricane Irma or Hurricane Maria as positive experience, that goes without say. But, great friendships were formed. And for that I’m grateful.

Have a great night friends.

My Little Songbird, Patrick

My Little Songbird, Patrick

Good evening friends.

Happy Poppy Rocky Lucky Tuesday evening to you. A day and night filled with Hope and Possibliteies. Remember, if Poppy, Rocky and Lucky can make it, anyone can. For all of our new friends – Poppy, Rocky and Lucky are 3 of our 7 dogs. Nobody had the decks stacked more against them than they did. But, through love, faith and hope, today they’re part of a happy Wolfpack of 7.

This here in the picture is Patrick. He’s 5 years old. I named him after the lategreat Patrick Swayze. These days I call him “Poppy”, “Little Pops” and “the Pops” depending on the mood and moment.

I originally saw Poppy in a pet store in NYC. A few months later when I was walking by the store, I noticed he was stil there. I spoke to the salesperson who told me they keep marking him down in price, but nobody seems to want him. The salesperson went on to say that he was 11 months old and had spent 8 months in the store already. That was the last time he ever saw that store again. Patrick was dog number 3 for us.

I call him my little songbird because when I used to visit him in the store, he would just stare out into space howling with a sweet tone. As I look back, I realize he had just given up on anyone wanting him. So, he would just zone out and sing these sweet little howls.

I think about Patrick all day when I’m away from him. He’s only 7 pounds, but he could bring to me knees with just a stare. In the time of forever, I will love him.

Day 1046 in Puerto Rico. Yes, 1046. Day 733 since we rescued Rocky, and day 196 since we rescued Lucky.

See you tomorrow friends. Scott Smith for Sammy & Family.

This is No Ordinary Love – Reiteration

This is No Ordinary Love - Reiteration

Fun video of this post;

Good morning friends.

I told everyone on May 16th, 2017, this is No Ordinary Love. Today, on November 7th, my love for Lucky has catapulted into the stratosphere. I am so “Lucky in Love” that even my neighbors say to me, “Scott, you really love that dog, don’t you?”

And with that, Happy Poppy Rocky Lucky Tuesday. A day filled with Hope and Possibilities. Remember, if Poppy, Rocky and Lucky can make it, anyone can.

For all of our new friends – Poppy, Rocky and Lucky are three of our seven dogs. The odds of all us being together were zero, but it happened anyway.

Anytime you’re feeling a little down and defeated, think of their story to propel you forward. Nobody had the decks stacked more against them than they did. It shows us that love, faith and hope can trounce any odds.

OK, let’s kick this day off with a positive notion;

Every time we rescue an animal, a miracle is created. Rescuing an animal is a very spiritual experience.

Day 1032 in Puerto Rico. Yes, 1032. Day 720 since we rescued Rocky, and day 182 since we rescued Lucky.

Halloween – 2017

Halloween - 2017

Happy Halloween friends. And Happy Poppy Rocky Lucky Tuesday. A day filled with Hope and Possibilities.

Remember, if Poppy, Rocky and Lucky can make it, anyone can.

Also, if you remember, Poppy’s real name in the picture here, is Patrick. We named him after the late great Patrick Swayze.

For all our new friends, Poppy, Rocky and Lucky are 3 of our 7 dogs. They had a very tough start in life. Today, they’re a Wolfpack of 7 and thriving like any other dogs. That’s why we say today is a day filled with “Hope and Possibilities.”

OK, let’s kick this day off on the right foot.

— Today has a good shot of being a great day. Let’s give today a chance —

Day 1025 here in Puerto Rico. Yes, day 1025. Today is day 713 since we rescued Rocky, and day 175 since we rescued Lucky.

Poppy Rocky Lucky Tuesday on October 24th, 2017

Good morning friends.

Happy Poppy Rocky Lucky Tuesday.

OK, let’s kick this day off with two positive notions;

1. Just because I was like that doesn’t mean I have to say like that. Everyday is another opportunity to start anew. It’s never too late to start and it always too early to quit.

2. Every time an animal is rescued, a miracle is created. Rescuing an animal is a very spiritual experience.

Day 1018 in Puerto Rico. Yes, 1018. Day 706 since we rescued Rocky, and day 168 since we rescued Lucky.

Happy Tuesday friends. Scott Smith for Sammy & Family.
